Multimedia

I produced this series of radio stories, audio slideshows and online videos using VeriCorder Technology’s ShowCase and 1st Video iPhone applications. I tested the apps, trained journalists and produced multimedia packages at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, the RTDNA@NAB Show in Las Vegas and municipal elections in Columbia, Missouri as part of my capstone project on mobile journalism.

Video: My capstone partner Erica Zucco and I produced this VeriCorder demo using 1st Video. You may notice a frames-per-second issue that led to unsynced audio. Developers have since resolved this problem.

Audio Slideshow: I shot, edited and uploaded this piece in less than 45 minutes from the top of a mountain in Whistler during the 2010 Winter Olympics. Voicing stories outdoors produces the highest quality audio with the iPhone unless you have an XLR mic. February, 2010.

Audio Slideshow: Four roving reporters covered Columbia, Missouri’s 2010 municipal elections with iPhones and 1st Video. We uploaded more than 30 clips to local NPR affiliate KBIA from watch parties, victory celebrations and concession speeches. KBIA aired several of these radio-quality clips during their live broadcast while speeches were still in progress. April, 2010.

Video: Our first reporting experience with 1st Video came at the National Association of Broadcasters Show in Las Vegas where Erica and I teamed up with NAB’s official Podcast the Digital Production BuZZ. I turned several audio interviews into video packages, including this piece on Motion Analysis. Using a monopod, Owle Bubo iPhone mount and XLR microphone provided stability and high quality audio.

Audio Slideshow: This piece on a bustling Japanese hot dog stand in Vancouver captures a bit of the Olympics’ culture and atmosphere.

Audio Slideshow: Traffic troubles are par for the course when the Olmypics come to town. VeriCorder’s mobile journalism tools allowed me to capture this unexpected detour en route to city center.

Audio Slideshow: Audio clips captured with the iPhone are radio quality, but visuals leave much to be desired. This interview with Vancouver singer Adaline demonstrates the iPhone’s limited image quality in a dim-lit Vancouver night club.
